Welcome to the IAE Aix-Marseille PhD Program in Management

Since its inception in 1955 as the first public business school in France, the IAE Aix-Marseille has been at the forefront of the production and diffusion of cutting-edge management research.

It is right there that IAE Aix-Marseille has established a selective and differentiated doctoral cursus, the “PhD Programme in Management”.

Admission

  • Admission

    The general conditions of admission in the “IAE Aix-Marseille PhD Programme” are defined by the Arrêté modifié (26 Août 2022) du 16 Mai 2016 and the AMU and CERGAM doctoral charters: a doctoral thesis project, presented by the doctoral student and accepted by his/her director(s), is submitted to the Ecole Doctorale (ED 372, which validates the registration on the basis of the candidate’s acceptance by the CERGAM research center to carry out the presented thesis project, under the academic supervision of his/her director(s).

    Additional conditions are required to be accepted in the “IAE Aix-Marseille PhD Programme”: admission in the programme is conditional on obtaining (i) the IAE Aix-Marseille’s Research Master or DESU and (ii) a dedicated doctoral AM doctoral contract, CIFRE, foreign doctoral funding, ...). Participation in the “IAE Aix-Marseille PhD Programme” can only be done full time.

    The final admission in the “IAE Aix-Marseille PhD Programme” is granted by the director of the IAE Aix-Marseille’s doctoral programme.

    No fees if the candidate is already registered in the doctoral programme in management of the AMU doctoral school 372.

Program content

After his/her successful thesis defense and evaluation, the student, registered in the “IAE Aix-Marseille PhD programme”, will receive the Docteur d’Aix-Marseille Université diploma in the management speciality, with the additional « IAE Aix-Marseille PhD Programme in Management » label.

To obtain this label, the PhD student must comply with (i) the full set of evaluation and graduation conditions of the Docteur d’Aix-Marseille Université diploma in the management speciality (as set in the doctoral charters of AMU and CERGAM) and (ii) the specific « IAE Aix-Marseille PhD Programme in Management » conditions. These are presented below.

  • Doctoral seminars

    In addition to the 50 hours of professional seminars (proposed and animated by the AMU college doctoral), the PhD student must commit to attending and validating before his/her thesis defense a minimum 100 hours of theoretical and methodological seminars. These seminars must be selected in priority among the doctoral seminars in management offered by the doctoral school and IAE. They must also include at least one European doctoral seminar (EDEN, EIASM or EDAMBA). In this latter case, the selection of the European doctoral seminar will have to be approved by the director the IAE doctoral programme. Subsequent to this approval, a (partial or full) funding to attend this European doctoral seminar will be granted by IAE, CERGAM and the doctoral school.

  • Thesis in essays

    The thesis will be prepared in an essay-based format (with a minimum of three essays). These essays can be written either in English or French. In the list of the thesis essays, one could be co-authored with the PhD supervisor(s) and at least one will be single authored by the PhD student.

  • Mobility in a foreign university

    The PhD student will have to carry out a visiting period for in a foreign university for at least one month. The selection of the foreign university to be visited will have to be approved by the director the IAE doctoral programme. The PhD student will be strongly recommended to select a foreign university among those participating in the CIVIS programme (with AMU) or among those which are strategic partners of the IAE Aix-Marseille. Subsequent to the visiting approval, a (partial or full) funding will be granted by IAE, CERGAM and the doctoral school

  • International Jury

    The defense jury will have to be made up in compliance with the Arrêté modifié (26 Août 2022) du 16 Mai 2016 and the doctoral charters of AMU and CERGAM. Moreover, this jury will have to include at least one professor from a foreign university. It will be here again highly recommended to the PhD student and his/her supervisor(s) to select the foreign university of the jury member(s) among those participating in the CIVIS programme (with AMU) or among those which are strategic partners of the IAE Aix-Marseille.
