LEADING RESEARCH ACTIVITIES IN A VARIETY OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCE FIELDS

Research by IAE Aix-Marseille’s teacher-researchers has been recognized at the national and international level. CERGAM has five disciplinary and transversal axes:

  • Entrepreneurship information and internationalization
  • Finance accounting control
  • Public management
  • Marketing and management of services
  • Strategy and human resources management

Some of these areas are directed by IAE Aix-Marseille teacher-researchers, as is CERGAM itself (Pr. Nathalie Richebé).

  • Finance: Margit Munzer
  • Marketing and management of services: Aurélie Hemonnet and Fanny Magnoni
  • Strategy and human resources management: Olivier Roques and Emmanuelle Reynaud

Within this framework, IAE Aix-Marseille teacher-researchers, individually or in teams, are involved in innovative research projects with important impacts on business and society. The general principle driving IAE Aix-Marseille research is that it has a clear purpose of producing actionable knowledge to be disseminated among its students and to its wider ecosystem.

IAE Aix-Marseille teacher-researchers are also heavily involved in training students in research. IAE Aix-Marseille has always placed the training of doctoral students at the heart of its strategic choices. It stands out in the French academic landscape as one of the largest French centers for training doctoral students in management sciences.

Since it was established as France’s first Institute of Business Administration (IAE) in 1955, IAE Aix-Marseille has been a pioneer in developing management research and doctoral students. It has trained teachers-researchers who no work at the most prestigious universities and business schools in France and abroad. It supervises 50 theses every year, and 70% of the doctoral candidates are international students.

The results of various recent research audits at IAE Aix-Marseille and CERGAM (HCERES and EQUIS reaccreditation of IAE Aix-Marseille in 2018) attest to this French and international recognition.

The IAE Aix-Marseille faculty brings together and mobilizes a diverse mix of profiles and skills to provide the best of management education to our students in initial and continuing education. That includes 40 teaching and research staff attached to CERGAM (one of the main French research centers in management sciences), 240 external speakers and professionals working in companies and public organizations in France, and 50 guest academics from foreign partner universities and international professionals. International speakers in recent years have included Henry Mintzberg, Denise Rousseau, William Starbuck, Andrew Pettigrew, and Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences winner, William Sharpe.

The IAE Aix-Marseille teaching and research staff have varied expertise in the fields of training and research. All the major disciplines of management sciences are represented at IAE Aix-Marseille alongside more specialized and cross-cutting themes (sustainable development, leadership, international entrepreneurship, service management, and luxury marketing) that reflect the institute’s strategic choices and axes of excellence in research (often supported by chairs).

  • The Chair of Entrepreneurial Legitimacy (CLE)

In recent years, the craze for business creation has profoundly transformed society. In an unpredictable environment, entrepreneurs, support structures, investors, and public organizations face a multitude of challenges, including: finding their way in a complex ecosystem, choosing the right partners, understanding institutional and financial games, making rapid operational and strategic decisions without neglecting factors crucial for their company’s future, and quickly seizing new opportunities.

The CLE was created by two professor-researchers (Bénédicte Aldebert and Antonin Ricard) and an entrepreneur (Jean-Baptiste Jaussaud) who saw entrepreneurial legitimacy as being key to responding to those challenges.

In concrete terms, the AMU CLE is part of the research activities conducted by CERGAM, which focuses on three activities:

    • Monitoring through its observatory the successes and failures of companies around the world. It collates and shares the latest articles, scientific results, and knowledge regarding entrepreneurship, innovation, internationalization, and company growth.
    • Holding workshops to disseminate recent research; participating in focus groups, experiments, analytical work, and specific research contracts.
    • Organizing events such as the Summer University on Entrepreneurial Legitimacy (UELE) to attract the world’s best entrepreneurship researchers and to exchange with the socioeconomic world.

CERGAM is one of the most important management sciences research centers in France. It has nearly 150 members, including professors, researchers, and doctoral students, working at the Universities of Aix-Marseille and Toulon. Founded in 1974, CERGAM is one of France’s main and oldest centers for doctoral studies in management sciences.

CERGAM’s mission is to promote management sciences research, embodied in doctoral theses (more than 400 defended), publications, and national and international scientific events. CERGAM provides its members with scientific and material support. Its doctoral students in management sciences are enrolled in doctoral schools, with 372 students at AMU and 509 at the University of Toulon. CERGAM participates in the activities of AMU institutes and two research federations.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES CONTRIBUTING TO THE INFLUENCE OF THE IAE

The IAE and its teachers-researchers are regularly involved in the organization of scientific conferences in management sciences.

  • La Londe Conference

In June every year, IAE Aix-Marseille holds an international conference in the field of marketing and management of services. The “Marketing Communications and Consumer Behavior” conference addresses two major areas of management on an alternating basis:

    • Consumer Behavior and Marketing (since 1974)
    • Service management (since 1990)

The La Londe “Marketing Communications and Consumer Behavior” conference is the most prestigious European conference in the field of consumer behavior. The event is organized with the European Association for Consumer Research. Every second year, it brings together researchers from all over the world. It has welcomed world-renowned guest speakers such as editors-in-chief of highly respected journals (Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing, and Journal of Consumer Psychology) and presidents of scientific associations (Association for Consumer Research). The teacher-researchers who have joined us at these conferences in recent years have included Chris A. Janiszewski, Margaret C. Campbell, Dan Ariely, John G. Lynch, Norbert Schwarz, and Robert Peterson

  • UELE

The Summer University on Entrepreneurial Legitimacy (UELE) aims to bring together researchers and actors from the socioeconomic world around the theme of legitimacy. Jointly organized by the Organizational Legitimacy Association and the Chair of Entrepreneurial Legitimacy (CLE), the next event will be held on in Marseille on July 12 and 14, 2023.

The UELE presents national and international researchers’ latest research on entrepreneurial legitimacy.

Those academic works form the basis for discussions with decision makers from the socioeconomic world.

The resulting exchanges between CEOs, entrepreneurs, investors, managers, decision makers, directors of support structures, and researchers are aimed at advancing understanding and implementation of the concept of legitimacy. The themes addressed will include: the analysis of legitimacy at various levels, the process of legitimization, the acquisition of legitimacy through a professional network or a support structure, legitimacy as a strategic or critical resource, start-up legitimacy and social networks, and internationalization.

A white paper will be published on the reflections that emerge during this second UELE.
